button made of a skin

Mesajde Ricardo » Sâm, 04 Dec 2010 15:45

Hello dear friends! I ask your help in identification - I find on the Romanian fighting positions near Odessa here such button made of a skin. The size diameter 19[ch1084][ch1084], a thickness 4[ch1084][ch1084]. Whether prompt it refers to the Romanian uniform WW2 and if it is possible lay out a photo? Thankful in advance!

Also on the Romanian fighting positions following buttons made of copper - 22[ch1084][ch1084] have been found diameter. Prompt it buttons from a service jacket or from an overcoat, the officer or the soldier? The information concerning a button made of a skin also interests - whether such buttons in a uniform of the Romanian Royal army in 1941 were used? Thanks.

Very interesting problem, we have here.
In the first case, the size of the button is near the size of the one used for the tunics of the officers and under-officers, and leather buttons were used by the Army but layout and the form of it is that of an inner one than an outer one.
In the second case, I thing we are dealing with a great-coat button used both for officers and men, the size being similar to that of the great-coat buttons that I know.

Hello! You have written that copper buttons on my photo - were used by officers and soldiers on an overcoat if I have correctly translated your answer. On the given photo one officer in a service jacket, and another in an overcoat - me seems that my buttons on the size more close to those that on a service jacket, and those that on an overcoat larger. Still me confuses - really buttons of officers didn't differ in any way from the soldier's? I will be grateful for your answer!

The overcoat buttons are larger than the ones on the service jacket. If the button has 22 mm that is the usual size for an overcoat. In this picture we have a sergent-major[\/i] (starshi-serjant, unterfeldwebel) and a soldier. The buttons in this case are made metal yellow. They could have been made in polished brass or golden copper or tin. During the war they also used buttons made in leather strips that were intertwined or darkened metal ones.
In the golden case, the buttons of the officers and the sub officers had the sign of the branch of arms imprinted on them.
In your case I think that you have a pair that probably was darkened.

Respected Emil Doctorul thanks for your irrefragable answer! Yes my copper buttons have diameter 22[ch1084][ch1084]. Would like to return to a problem of leather buttons - I couldn't understand sense of a phrase "and leather buttons were used by the Army but layout and the form of it is that of an inner one than an outer one" if to you not difficult explain please. With gratitude, Ricardo.

What I meant was that a button with 4 holes like yours looks more like a button used on the inside of the coat more than one used on the outside of the coat. It could also have been used for a trooper service dress.
